The Star of good fortune. Page 1/2

The Star shows that your wishes are under a lucky star

Those who draw this card can be confident that a relationship or project will bear fruit in the long run.

Stars are generally associated with good things: As a shining heavenly body, they glitter and radiate in a way that disguises their true distance. The star-filled heavens give us a feeling of security and fascination in equal measure. And of course the word “star” is included figuratively in terms like movie star and rock star, both figures in the public spotlight who serve as idealised role models.

Astronomically, one differentiates between fixed stars and comets; both have similar mythological meaning, although the comet tends to be regarded as more important due to its rare appearance. But stars have long had a special meaning in not only the mythological, but also on the practical level, insofar as they have offered orientation for navigation, seasons, and time reckoning. Calendars were based on the position of the stars, and served navigational purposes on sea voyages. The Pleiades, a star cluster which is also called the Seven Sisters, is visible in the northern hemisphere from May to October, and indicates the start and finish of the seafaring season. The twelve major constellations also serve as the basis for the zodiac in astrology.

Symbolism
The Star in Tarot is held in much the same view as the star in mythology: It shows the way and is a symbol of a bountiful future—and is interpreted as visionary.

tarot_the_star_starform_78x78In the “Rider-Waite” deck we see on the Star card a naked, young blonde woman, who is holding two pitchers of water. The contents of one pitcher are emptied into a river, the other onto the riverbank upon which she kneels. It probably suggests that everything on this card is in motion and literally in flow, returning to the source. Over the woman’s head we see an eight-pointed star, which is ringed by seven other stars. The number seven in numerology stands for creativity, and in classic Astrology one worked with the seven known planets. Many Tarot interpreters associate this star with Sirius, the brightest star of the heavens. The young woman represents the water-carrier Aquarius and seems to draw the water from a single source.

Other Tarot Decks
The Star card in the Thoth deck of Aleister Crowley gives a very beautiful and hopeful impression. The woman on the card is the god Nuith, the Lady of the Stars. She also holds a pitcher in each hand, with the golden pitcher in her right hand over her head, while her lowered left hand empties the contents of the silver pitcher to the ground. According to Crowley, the substance is not water, but rather the “undying tincture of life.” The eternal circulation between the universe and the earth is also represented here. Overhead shines a star with seven rays. The card before The Star is The Tower, which represents a shattered ruin in chaos. The Star’s message is that of a new beginning, connected with inspiration and hope. It shows us that the future starts in the here and now, and that we are on the right path.
